Families United Network have received a £3,000 donation from the Shanly Foundation to help fund their respite services for children living with disabilities.
Based in Luton, Bedfordshire the charity provides a free service for families with disabled children and young people aged from birth up to 40 years. Through a programme of trips and clubs, families can gain confidence by taking part in new activities for the first time.
Over 400 families currently access the service and the Shanly Foundation’s donation will help them continue their vital work, offering respite services and giving families time to unwind. Most importantly it gives the young people a space that is safe, stimulating and allowing the young people to be themselves, developing their independent skills and making friends.
Diane Rhodes, charity manager, comments: “Donations are so important to the charity – these vital funds help us to remain sustainable. Disabled families depend on our services and without support there is always the fear that services would need to be reduced or stopped. Families United Network is proud of the guidance and help we are able to provide.”
Events the charity host include a Youth Club for young people aged 10 to 17 years, held weekly during term time. Here, children take part in interesting and educational activities to teach important social and independence skills. Saturday Club runs fortnightly for ages 9 to 18 to spend time with their peers; giving their family the opportunity to take a break from their usual caring responsibilities.
Tamra Booth, trustee of the Shanly Foundation, comments: “We hope our donation will ensure that Families United Network can continue to run upcoming events and provide the services that are highly valued by their members. We recognise the respite services that Families United Network offers are so vital to families and carers of disabled children.”
Fundraising is ongoing, with £160,000 needed to be raised annually. To donate or for further information about the charity visit familiesunitednetwork.org.uk
